Dickerson Park Zoo

If you’ve never been to the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri, you’re missing out. It’s one of the top zoological parks in the country with over 500 animals representing 160 species. The zoo has been an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1986. The zoo is family friendly, and you’re sure to have a great time. The zoo is located near I-44 exit 77. The zoo has more than 550 animals and many exhibits. There’s an exhibit dedicated to tropical animals, which includes Asian elephants, tigers, and primates. Other highlights include the Missouri Habitats exhibit, which has gray wolves, river otters, and mountain lions. The zoo also has a Titus Express train, which travels the grounds.

The zoo was founded in 1923 on property acquired from an old hotel. It was expanded during the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration. Sadly, the zoo fell into disrepair and was close to closure. Fortunately, it was saved by the Friends of the Museum in 1975 and today offers fun and educational special events for families. So, what are you waiting for? Don’t miss it!

A 55-acre zoo, Dickerson Park Zoo Springfield, is an oasis for kids and adults alike. The animals are well-maintained and cared for. The zoo is involved in several conservation plans, including helping Asian Elephants and maned wolves reproduce. Karen and I took our two children on a Saturday afternoon for a family outing. The zoo is perfect for afternoon outings, with a small admission fee.

The zoo’s history is interesting. In 1922, it was on the brink of closing, but in the 1990s, a master plan was put into place.
